Hakuoh is a character in the Duel Masters anime and manga series.

His name loosely translates to "White Phoenix", which also reveals what deck theme he uses: the Light Civilization.

Personality[]

Hakuoh is perceived as an intelligent duelist with a strong winning streak. He has a habit of holding back in order to toy with his opponents until he has one or two shields remaining before taking things seriously and twist everything around with a single turn.

Despite often being treated with the highest amount of respect due to his position as the leader of the White Soldiers and his wealthy background, Hakuoh is actually a cheerful, friendly and kind-hearted person who loves dueling more than anything else. He often praises his opponents for their strength or well-made decks, regardless of the outcome of their duels. His charismatic and admirable self also made him very popular among girls, and often seen as the example of a "perfect Duelist".

However, there are multiple times where Hakuoh has shown his biggest weaknesses that contradicts his "flawless" image, which connects to his guilt of failing to protect his late mother from her demise. At a certain point, Hakuoh would do anything to become stronger and overcome his regrets, even if it's at the price of his own emotions and friendship. This leads to his ruthless personality and antagonistic role as he was controlled by Master throughout the first season, but he later returned to his usual self later on after being brought into the light by Shobu.

When Hakuoh became a Fua Duelist under the name White, his personality became more ruthless than himself in season 1. He's also changed into someone more aggressive, prideful, and foul-mouthed. Even Zakira claimed that taking away Hakuoh's memories before brainwashing him into White would make him stronger than before, as he is no longer restricted by his emotional attachment towards his friends and especially his late mother.

Hakuoh is also very self-conscious regarding his own flaws and past mistakes. Aside from his never-ending mourn towards his mother, this especially shows when Benny Haha severely injured him during the Battle Arena tournament in Charge. Hakuoh did not put the blame on Benny Haha, but instead, he took the culpability on himself as he believed that Benny Haha would never seek revenge if it wasn't for his past wrongdoings despite discovering his treachery. The same situation also occurred later in Cross and Fighting Edge, where Hakuoh thought that White's existence is his "biggest sin" and the only two ways for him to atone himself is to defeat Zakira or completely disappear from this world.

Anime[]

Season 1[]

Hakuoh is the strongest duelist shown at the Temple. He mainly uses cards from the Light Civilization in his deck, and is also the leader of the White Soldiers. He never enters tournaments as he is the head of the Temple, and had never lost a game before his duel with Shobu.

In order to duel against Hakuoh, a duelist must obtain 50 tokens from many duelists in a free-for-all challenge and also to defeat the four Temple Guardians. Before Hakuoh was turned evil by the Master, he was a nice person and a great duelist who enjoyed playing for fun. After his duel with Shobu where he lost, he joined Shobu's group of friends.

Hakuoh first appeared in Episode 6 of the first season of the Duel Masters anime, when he had a match with a duelist from China, To-Ban-Jan. To-Ban-Jan used a Fire Civilization deck that was similar to Shobu's deck. Hakuoh managed to defeat To-Ban-Jan easily in their duel.

Duel Masters Versus[]

He appears as a teenager in Shobu's flashback in episode 46 when Katta Kirifuda read his thoughts through the letter. Even Shobu was reminded of Hakuoh through Lucifer, despite his memory loss.

Duel Masters King![]

When Shobu's future nephew Joe Kirifuda landed more than 20 years in the past by chasing Zero Jr. through the time slip portal, Hakuoh was surprised that the latter recogonize him. Before Joe could explain any more, Deckie hold him off as it's not their objective and the risk of changing the future. However, his Alcadeias, Lord of Spirits power was taken by the Five Gattles, which results in Jendle obtaining Dorphadillom, Holy Demon Concatenated King, turning the card gray. When Joe summons Bolshack Momoking NEX through Star Evolution, Hakuoh was surprised that Joe was using Bolshack NEX power, being Shobu's signature card. As Momoking destroys Dorphadillom and Jendle's defeat, Alcadeias and Ballom returns to their original state. However, as Jendle calls Joe by his full name, making Hakuoh accurately deduce Joe's connection to Shobu and being from the future.

Joe attempts to return Alcadeias to Hakuoh, when the card itself allow Joe to keep him while restoring the gray copy. By attaing Alcadeias, Momoking attain another of his Star Evolution form as Alcadeias Momoking. When Joe returns back to his time, Hakuoh bids farewell, telling the latter to say his regards to future Shobu, much to both his and Deckie surprise. Mimi was surprised that Hakuoh deduce Joe as Shobu's future relative, implying the time they were in occurs months after Shobu's disappearance in Star Cross.

Manga[]

Duel Masters: Fighting Edge[]

Hakuoh initally did not made any official appearances outside of flashbacks. It wasn't until Volume 3 where he would show up as the Fua Duelist member, White, instead of Hakuoh himself. As Fighting Edge is a direct sequel to series 1, this connects to the aftermath of Shobu losing to Zakira and unable to save Hakuoh from turning into White.

White, alongside his assistant Gedo, was first shown arriving in Spain, almost directly after Shobu and Esmeralda are already leaving to Egypt in their search for the 7 Duel Masters. As instructed by Zakira, White immediately attempted to murder Shori Kirifuda with a sword, but later challenged him in a duel. Much to Shori's surprise, White summoned a number of cards from the Darkness Civilization, including Auzesu, Demonic Elemental; indicating that White is no longer the same Hakuoh, who came from a family that has been protecting the Light Civilization cards for many generations. This is proved further when White admitted that he no longer remembers his late mother due to the effect of Zakira's brainwash and Gedo's hypnosis, even to the point of calling his mother an "old hag" and was completely unfazed at the mention of her death. White later introduced his new trump card, Heaven's Gate and calls two Syrius, Firmament Elemental, but that tactic was soon countered by Shori and leaving White with 0 shields and no blockers. However, the duel completely turns into White's favor once again after Shori suddenly collapsed on the ground and unable to finish his turn; giving White the opportunity to acquire his victory and perform his final direct attack by summoning Alphadios, Lord of Spirits. As Shori fell into the sea and assumed to be dead, White accomplished his mission to eliminate Shobu's own father.

White did not appear in the Egypt arc, but he was briefly mentioned to be heading to Japan along with Gedo.

He would later reappear again at the start of the World Tournament in Japan, with his new trump card Ulpheus, Dragonic Elemental. Several implications were shown that White might still have certain memories that wasn't completely lost when he was still Hakuoh, especially when White declared a "Perfect Duel" during the tournament; a tactic that last used by Hakuoh against Benny Haha in the Battle Arena championship. Despite White successfully defeated all of his opponents without too much trouble, he ended up resigning from the said tournament and was chased by Rekuta, who also witnessed White's duels since the beginning.

The rest was continued in a bonus chapter, where White turned into Hakuoh after encountering the "Light of Gods". At the same time, Hakuoh being reported as "missing" and rumored to be the evil duelist named White have floated around the media and tabloids, that even news reporter attempted to interview Shobu and Mimi regarding Hakuoh's whereabouts or to confirm if those rumors were actually true. In the middle of the said interview, Hakuoh, who's all injured and unable to walk properly, suddenly approached Shobu and Mimi and asked them to bring him inside his home...which he calls as the "Gate of Light". Hakuoh later begged Shobu to "purify" him by defeating him in a duel, however, he was soon turned into White when Gedo's presence become closer and activated his hypnosis once again. During the Kaijudo duel against Shobu, White somehow regained his past memories as "Hakuoh" and recalled all his happier days with his friends. White won the duel in the end, but Shobu still claimed that the duel was "fun", making White hesitated to eliminate Shobu. He later returned to the Fua Duelist and left the "Gate of Light", but White...or in this case, Hakuoh, was also seen crying with a smile on his face.

As the Fua Duelist member gathered, Gedo noticed White who has been silent since his last duel with Shobu. A flashback of Hakuoh's past, including the death of his mother and his meeting with Shobu was recalled by White...and soon as he completely regained his memories, the "W" symbol on his forehead disappeared and White have completely returned into Hakuoh for the last time. Hakuoh declared that this is his only way to atone all the sins he did as White and challenged Zakira in a "Perfect Duel", but Zakira decided that he must defeat Yesman first. Both Hakuoh and Yesman were sent to a floating platform above the entire city, where everyone—including Shobu could witness their duel. On the said duel, Zakira announced that if Hakuoh wins, the Fua Duelist would disappear and the world will be in peace, however, if the otherwise happens and he loses, the entire world will be the one that disappears instead. As the duel almost come to an end, Hakuoh was confident that if he triggered his newly added card, Super Spark on his last shield, he would win the duel. However, everything fell apart when Yesman summoned Civil Bind, making him unable to use his Shield Trigger and was defeated by Yesman. Hakuoh fell down the floating platform and was eliminated by Yesman's direct attack, rendering him gravely wounded.

As the entire city undergoes a huge chaos caused by the Fua Duelist, Shobu held onto Hakuoh's cape. During the duel of Shobu vs Zakira, Hakuoh's "corpse" was found by Kintaro. Dr. Root tried his best to recover Hakuoh, but he stated that Hakuoh is at the edge of his life and his heart rate will stop anytime soon. Hakuoh, who's half-conscious and on his last few breaths, recalled a memory of him giving a certain card to Shobu in the past, which he called as "the card filled with my memories with Shobu". Hakuoh's spirit appeared in front of Shobu to remind him of the said card, and unfortunately, Hakuoh's spirit suddenly disappeared as Hakuoh stopped breathing and finally passed away. The card was revealed to be Bolpheus Heaven, Super Holy Dragon, and Shobu was able to seize his victory against Zakira thanks to the card and the power of the 7 Duel Masters.

After Shobu won the duel and stopped the Fua Duelist from causing anymore chaos, a gem that is known as the "Duel Masters Proof" appeared in front of Shobu's eyes and granted his wish, reviving Hakuoh from his death. However, when Hakuoh woke up, he immediately told Shobu to stay away from him and felt like he did not deserve to be alive after all the wrongdoings he did... especially the fact that he also killed Shobu's own father. (In reality, unbeknown to both parties, Shori was revived by Kokujo under the instruction of Zeus.) Completely disagreeing with Hakuoh, Shobu tried to cheer him up and said that he wanted to see Hakuoh and his smile again, that none of that matters to him anymore. In the end, as the Fua Duelists left and the world is returned to peace, both Hakuoh and Shobu finally reunited once again and hugged each other.

Hakuoh was seen in the epilogue along with Shobu and the rest of the White Soldiers, bidding a farewell to the Duel Masters who are about to return to their respective countries.

Deck[]

Hakuoh's deck is focused on Light civilization creatures, summoning creatures with high power and the Blocker ability as well as tapping opponent creatures. Because light blockers usually can attack other creatures, but not players, Hakuoh uses tapping cards to enable his blockers to take down his opponent's creatures as well as block his enemy's attacks. He also uses Diamond Cutter to enable his blockers to attack players to speed up their defeat.

In Season 2 when he was in the Shobu's group he started to also use some of the Nature Civilization and multicolored cards in his deck. In the end of this season he was captured by Zakira and became brainwashed.

He was then told about the tragic story of his mother, and how Shobu's group was the cause of everything and that Shobu's group was also holding him back.

In Season 3, he appeared in the persona known as "White", and started to use Darkness Civilization cards in his deck.

Season 1

Urth and Hanusa were cards that were gifted to him from his mother, as well as his main trump cards.

Sacred Lands

Duel Masters Charge

  • In the Duel Masters Charge season, Hakuoh changes his deck a few times.

During the Duel Masters movie, Hakuoh used new deck based on his vortex evolution card Aura Pegassus. He used both Light and Nature Civilization cards.

His battle arena tournament deck began as a Light and Water deck based on creatures with the BlockerBlocker ability that is based on summoning Alcadeias. He added Water Civilization cards to his deck because he thought that he needed more draw power.

Later in the season, when he was able to duel again, Hakuoh began to use Light and Nature cards. His main trump cards and then discovered to be an Awakening Card is Alphadios, Lord of Spirits.

After he was turned into White he dueled Mimi, using Light and Nature deck focusing on adding mana to summon Alphadios, Lord of Spirits.

While he was White he dueled Kokujo, he added many Cross Gear into his deck. His trump card was still Alphadios, Lord of Spirits.

Zero Duel Masters

  • His deck was based on powerful blockers and evolution creatures like Larba Geer and Alcadeias. He uses less cost and more efficient tap cards.

Season 3/4/5/6 deck

  • In later seasons of the anime, Hakuoh starts to use cards from the White Knight name category. These cards were used in season 3 and 4.

At the end of Season 4, he started to use a new deck based on DMC-46 Arcadias Knights. This deck also featured various cards from Darkness Civilization, as well as multicolored Light and Darkness creatures. The deck is also used by his regular consciousness in the Duel Masters Star Cross manga against Surprise. He used some cards:

In the middle of the 5th season, Hakuoh was saved by Shobu's group. After being saved, he changed his deck back to the light civilization and used a DMC-50 Perfect Angel deck. He used the Perfect Angel deck and managed to defeat Zakira and promised to Shobu and the group to always be a part of their group, and to become stronger.  He also used Syrius, Firmament Elemental.

Similar to the others in the group, Hakuoh started to use Psychic Creatures and Hyperspatial spells in Season 6.

  • When Shobu won his duel in Season 1 against him, his hair turned from blue to yellow.
  • In the Versus Saga, Lucifer was like his counterpart in Katta's generation, similar to Katta Kirifuda being similar to his brother Shobu Kirifuda.
  • His birthday is on December 25 [1], which is also the date for Christmas.
  • Throughout the manga, he had a total of 82% winning rate, which also tied with Zakira as the second Duelist with the highest winning rate in Shobu's era (the first being Dr. Root), implying that his strength in dueling could rival Zakira's.
  • It remained unknown whether "Hakuoh" is his surname or first name. His mother refers him as "Hakuoh", hinting that it could be his first name. However, in some instances, Hakuoh refers to his family as "the Hakuoh family" (白凰家) which is commonly used with surnames such as the "Fua family" (不亞家) or "Kirifuda family" (切札家).
    • Either one of them might be for the sake of convenience due to his lack of a full name.
  • Hakuoh is extremely notorious for having a streak of bad luck in the canon storyline of the manga and anime, and is often the victim to most conflicts happened. It includes but not limited to:
    • In the original Duel Masters Manga: Series 1, his mother was killed by Gedo.
    • He was later controlled by Master that turned him into someone ruthless and where others started to hold a grudge on him.
    • After Hakuoh was returned to conscious, in the Battle Arena arc, his friends were kidnapped by Benny Haha out of revenge; as they were used as hostages in attempt to force Hakuoh to retire from the tournament.
    • Despite winning against Benny Haha, the duel ended up with Benny Haha badly injuring him with a bomb, leading Hakuoh to being hospitalized throughout Shobu's semi-final duel in the tournament.
    • He managed to recover by the time the Battle Arena tournament ended, but Zakira immediately took away his memories as another hostage attempt to obtain the remaining Awakening Card.
    • Upon waking up from his amnesia, Hakuoh's personality and memories were regressed as if he was a baby who's still learning to speak.
    • After his victory against a double duel with Miss Kirumi and Jason, all his friends fainted under a hypnosis by Gedo, who later kidnapped him to the Fua Castle.
    • Near the end of Fua Castle arc; Shobu ended up failing to save him from Fua Duelist's ritual--resulting Hakuoh being fully brainwashed into White.
    • In Duel Masters: Fighting Edge, he "killed" Shori unconsciously as his alter-ego White and it became another thing he deeply regretted throughout the series.
    • When he turned back into Hakuoh near the finale of Fighting Edge, he dueled against Yesman but was unexpectedly defeated and lead to the Fua Duelists starting a mass destruction in the city.
    • His defeat against Yesman resulted him into his death, but he was later revived by Shobu. This was the first time they've reunited since their separation in Fua Castle arc (approximately 16 volumes).
    • In Duel Masters: Star Cross, his strategy against Passion failed that it ultimately killed Mimi and Ryoga.
    • He later performed an inherited secret technique called "White Out", which erases all of Hakuoh's emotion and mind, but that also comes at a cost of Hakuoh ignoring everything surrounding him, including Shobu's and Rekuta's death.
    • He later traded his own life to revive Shobu, which also permanently puts Hakuoh into a comatose state.
    • Hakuoh, Mimi, Ryoga and Rekuta was revived again in the finale of Star Cross, but the Adam tower collapsed into Shobu and sunk him into the sea. The final chapter of SX later showed Hakuoh desperately opening Shobu's coffin that shows no traces of his corpse.
    • Hakuoh would later receive a final letter from Shobu that resulted him in a breakdown. It wasn't until the timeskip in SX's finale where it hinted Shobu reuniting with his friends again, including Hakuoh.
