Destroy is a keyword action.
Details[]
The act of sending a card from the battle zone to its owner's graveyard is known as "removal" and is the most common way to get rid of cards in the game. Many cards lack resistance abilities, making them vulnerable to removal effects that destroy cards in the battle zone.
However, creatures sent to the graveyard can be brought back into the battle zone by cards with "Reanimate" abilities or returned to a player's hand through "Salvage" effects. Cards that destroy other cards are most common in the Darkness and Fire civilizations, such as "Terror Pit" (a fixed removal effect) and "Reckless Cut Scrapper" (a cost-based removal effect). It is also possible to destroy your opponent's creatures by attacking their tapped creatures.
The card effect that destroys will specify the card type it targets, with most cards that destroy being limited to creatures. However, there are also is also Card Based Removal effects that can destroy all card types, including non-creature cards.
It's important to note that some cards allow you to also destroy your own cards, not just your opponent's.
Rules[]
- Cards that are destroyed are pit into their owner's graveyard. However, certain cards with "can't be destroyed" abilities such Immortal Boost, Crimson Lord or replacement effects such as Perfect Madonna, Channeler of Suns, can remain in the battle zone.
- Creatures that lose a battle or have their power reduced to 0 by Decrease Power are destroyed. This is a state-based action of the game rules, not the effect of a card.
- Destruction by battle's commonly known as "combat destruction".
- Moving cards from one zone into another non-graveyard zone isn't considered as "destroy". Even if a creature's put into the graveyard from a zone other than the battle zone, it won't be treated as "destroy".
- Card Discard and Mana Burn are often referred to as "Hand Destruction" and "Mana Destruction" respectively, but they're not treated as "destroy". Since none of them are treated as "destroy", Put Into Graveyard abilities aren't triggered.
- Psychic cells and Evolution Sources aren't considered creatures by themselves. Therefore, even if a creature's sent from the battle zone to the graveyard, it may not be considered as being destroyed. For instance, if the Evolution Source's put into the graveyard with card removal, the Evolution Source isn't treated as a creature and isn't considered as being destroyed. Further details can be seen on Card Based Removal and Graveyard Feed.
Cost and Trigger Ability[]
The effect of "destroying" as a cost, and the ability to trigger "being destroyed" are different.
- Wicked Soul Reincarnation allows you to draw 2 cards for each creature you put into your graveyard, regardless of whether they remain in the battle zone or not (See Cost).
- Super Trash Train, Fuuma Devil doesn't allow you to draw a card unless the card enters the graveyard (see Trigger Ability).
The above 2 situations can be summarized with the following.
- "To Destroy" refers to "putting a card [object in the battle zone] into a graveyard" and the timing of the "when destroyed" effect functions when it enters the graveyard. (Example: The Destruction Replacement effect of Hanzou, Menacing Phantom)
- "Destroyed" refers to "a card [object] was put into a graveyard from the battle zone". If the text refers to "when a creature is destroyed", the timing will then trigger. (Example: The Trigger Ability of Super Trash Train, Fuuma Devil)
Even if you lose a battle and your creature is put into a graveyard, it is considered as "destroy". It triggers any abilities that occur "when you put this creature into a graveyard" and "when this creature is destroyed".
